If more colors are desired in the final design, the process is repeated with different screens. Therefore , a design that requires 4 different colors would require four different screens. The screens are sometimes placed on a rotary press which permits the different color prints to be properly aligned or registered with each other. Some screen printer has entirely automatic presses that do not need any manual labor other than set-up and loading/unloading.
There are a spread of ways that the screen can be masked. The most easy way is to apply masking fluid immediately on the screen. This system is suitable for easy 1 or 2 color graphics but is ineffectual for more complex prints. For multicolor jobs, screen printer frequently use photosensitive emulsions to form the masked areas. First, the design is made on a clear piece of plastic film. Meanwhile, a photosensitive coating is applied to the whole surface of the screen and then dried. The film is placed on the prepared screen and they are exposed to intense light. After a period, the exposed areas can be washed off the screen with water which makes the screen prepared to print. Screen printing is most commonly used for t-shirts, threads and other fabrics. When a printer prints on darker items, a base print may be needed to ensure that the colors maintain their vivacity. A base color ( usually white ) is applied wherever the final print is desired ; it is then flash-cured and the subsequent colors are released on top. This flash-curing method adds another step to the process, but makes sure brilliant prints on dark or even black materials. Printers should be conscious of the healthy and environmental concerns.
